Empress of Cuba Habano Toro (by AJ Fernandez)

A medium-bodied Nicaragua smoke with earthy pepper, a hint of coffee, and a spicy retrohale—slow burning and ridiculously good for the money.

Tasting notes

Nose: Habano wrapper gives a light cedar aroma (not too strong). Foot is earthy. Cold draw is ideal with a slight pepper tingle.

Palate: First third: earthy pepper with a slight coffee note. Very slow burn (about 1 inch in ~30 minutes) and the profile didn’t really change in that time—stayed in the same earthy-pepper lane.

Finish: Earthy finish with a spicy pepper retrohale. Aftertaste stays earthy and clean—no sweetness, just steady earth and pepper.

Pairing

Fantastic with a Cuban espresso. Also pairs great with Woodford Reserve Double Oaked, Pinot Noir, or Ron Zacapa Centenario 23.

Final verdict

Wrapper: Habano. Vitola: Toro 6 x 52. Binder/Filler: Nicaragua. Medium profile. Construction was strong overall (perfect draw, slightly wavy burn but no touch-ups needed, ash held OK, medium smoke output). Needed 2 relights in ~30 minutes. At about $5.63 a stick (box of 16 for $90), this is a repeat-buy—great medium cigar that’s as close to Cuban as you can get from Nicaragua.
